July 2025 Newsletter

Well, July was a bit hectic and exciting. Lots of varied concerts, catching up with people, an interview for a job (which I didn’t get) and one and a half trips away. Some social sewing as well as ‘shit I don’t have anything to wear’ to an interview sewing.

Concerts

The concerts for the month started off with a concert by the SSO Fellows at the Conservatory of Music. I had a mixed response to this concert it was an amazing performance but some of the compositions didn’t work for me. The standout piece was by Deborah Cheetham Fraillon, Woven Song. The next night just to mix it up backed it up with the final performance by Monkey Spanner at the Paddo RSL. 600 people jumping up and down to ska music was epic. So so much dancing. The next concert was SSO at the Opera House, Ravel & Falla. I was a bit concerned about Ravel’s Bolero but actually it was awesome. The highlight though was Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat: Suites No.1 and No.2  (playlist of the concert and program). The next SSO concert was at City Recital Hall. It was a trial of a new series that they are going to run next year, Listen to this. This one was on Sibelius. it was awesome it was a deep dive into his music breaking down compositional techniques and themes throughout the pieces. Really lovely look at the music in a different way. (program and playlist). The last concert of the month was cocktail hour, Bruch & Gatti by the SSO players in the Utzon Room. I got to fangirl as there was a double bass in both the Gatti Sextet and Bruch Octet. A really great concert as always. (program and playlist)

Sewing

The month kicked off with Sewcial at Usefulbox Sewing School. It was a great day. I made lots of progress on my M8206 View A pants. I did get them finished during the month but I don’t really like the fabric so will have to remake them in something a bit nicer. Then the make of the month was a new shirt for the job interview. I used McCall’s 3550 View D a vintage 1970s pattern that I’ve made before. Since I’ve got a little more rotund I had to make some adjustments. I am extremely happy with the outcome. It fits beautifully even if I do say so myself.

Adventures

So there was 2 adventures. The first was to Wollongong to the ACMS (Amature Chamber Music Society) playing days and to catch up with James and Alera. The first day was great we played Bach’s Brandenburg No3 and Schubert’s Octet in F Major. Day 2 not good, will not say anymore. Catching up with James and Alera was brilliant so great to see them. The other adventure took advantage of the free rail travel put on for 2 days by State Rail. So I went and spent the night in Narrabri. I didn’t really get to see much of Narrabri but it was an amazing day of rail travel. Listening to audio books and looking out the window. Everyone was really nice on the train. The staff were the same on the way up and back they were smilie and great fun. I think I might do more trips like this in the future.

On the Tele

So I’ve been watching Travels with Agatha Christie and Sir David Suchet on SBS ondemand. In which Sir David follows Agatha Christie’s journey in the 1920s with her husband to the commonwealth countries. The second episode is very exciting as he visits as Agatha did the Waddamana Power Station in Tasmania. I have also visited it and it is just absolutely amazing. I was so excited when it came on the tele.

Books

I eventually finished Rosanna by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. It took me about 4 months to read. It is a change from my normal cosy murder mysteries and definiately falls into the Police procedural catagory. When I got to the end I realised that It had taken me almost the same amount of time to read the book as the story had taken to unfold. Kinda reading it in real time. The other books I read this month were my Agatha Christie read for the month ‘One, Two Buckle my Shoe’, a cross stitch cosy murder mystery ‘Crossed by Death by A.C.F. Bookens, a historial murder mystery ‘Murder on Astor Place’ by Victoria Thompson and finally my favourite for the month I listened to ‘Hamlet is not OK’ by R.A. Spratt. Just so much fun.

The Job and Interview

I know that you are all dying to know. So a job as R&D Electrical Engineer (Technology Translator) came up at UNSW. It seemed the perfect fit for me. It was an electrical engineering role in the Technology Translation Squad, Yes I had images of A-Team van with nerds jumping out to fix electrical engineering problems. It all went well I got an interview, hence the mad shirt making. I had fun at the interview the people were really nice. Unfortuately I wasn’t what they were looking for and it turns out what they were offering wasn’t what at led to the role. So great experience no hard feelings. They could see me in the group just not in this role and the role they want me in doesn’t exist.

Wrap Up and Looking Forward

So to wrap up the month it was very full and exciting a wide variety of activies and adventures. In August I’m off to Hobart for the Beaker Street Festival. I also have my graduation. Plus a heap of concerts and books. I might even get some more sewing in. Have a wonderful month. As always thanks for reading I hope you enjoyed it. I will hopefully get April, May and June out soon, proabably just up on the website in very brief format if I can make it short. Hehehehe

Have fun.
